Your Apprenticeship Questions—Answered!

Just finished school or college and thinking about an apprenticeship? You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place.

Taking the next step in your education or career can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options out there. If you’re considering an apprenticeship but still have a few questions, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. We’ve pulled together some quick, clear FAQs to help you feel confident about your next move.

Do I have to go to college?

No! Apprenticeships don’t require you to attend college. They combine practical, on-the-job training with online or in-house learning instead. It really depends on the apprenticeship and the training provider. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to traditional education such as university, they’re fantastic for those who prefer hands on learning and those looking to get stuck in in the working world.

How much work do I have to do in my own time?

Apprenticeships are designed to fit within your working hours, so you won’t be expected to complete tasks or study outside of work. Your employer will ensure you have dedicated time during your working day called ‘off the job training’ to focus on your training and development.

Off the job training is dedicated learning and development time. While the name may suggest you will be away from your role, that isn’t the case. Other than the weekly allocated study time, the rest typically consists of naturally occurring activities. Any additional work outside of working hours is optional.

Do I get paid?

Yes! Apprenticeships are paid positions. The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage is currently £7.55 (around £14,525 if you work 37 hours a week) but some employers choose to pay more depending on the role and your experience. Other routes such as university cost money and mean having student loans, so an apprenticeship is a great option for those looking to earn and learn at the same time.

Is there a job at the end of it?

In many cases, yes. Most apprenticeships lead to a job within the company you trained with. If not, you’ll still have a recognised qualification and valuable experience to help you find a role elsewhere. Many employers hire apprentices with the long-term goal of them growing into permanent roles. Around two-thirds (64%) of apprentices remain with the same employer and around 85% stay in full-time employment after completing their apprenticeship.

What happens if I need more time to complete?

If you’re struggling or need more time, speak with your training provider and employer. Extensions can often be arranged to delay your end point assessment (EPA) until you’re ready to make sure you finish at your best without unnecessary pressure.

Can I complete another apprenticeship afterward?

Absolutely! As long as the next apprenticeship offers new learning and progression (for example, moving from a Level 2 to a Level 3), you can do another one. Many people use apprenticeships to keep building their skills and advancing in their careers. Explore the career maps on our Careers Hub to discover the potential routes apprenticeships can lead to.

What happens if I don’t like it?

It’s okay if it’s not the right fit. You can talk to your employer or training provider about your concerns. Sometimes adjustments can be made, or they may help you explore other options such as transferring onto a different course. Your wellbeing and future progression are important.

Can I complete it sooner than the recommended time?

In some cases, yes—especially if you demonstrate all the required skills and knowledge early. But this depends on the structure of your apprenticeship and the agreement with your employer and training provider. It’s always best to check.

Ready to take the next step?

Apprenticeships are a brilliant way to gain real-world experience, earn a wage, and kickstart your career—all while continuing your education. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to switch things up, there’s an apprenticeship out there for you.
