Progress Your Career with the Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship

When it comes to advancing a career in early years education, two key pathways stand out: the Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship (EYLP) and the foundation degree. While both qualifications sit at the same level, they take very different routes to professional development.

The foundation degree has traditionally been the more popular choice, largely because people were unaware of the EYLP Apprenticeship as an alternative.

While a foundation degree is a great option, many learners struggle to dedicate the necessary time to it. This qualification requires significant study outside of work and personal commitments and relies on classroom-based learning, which may not be suitable for everyone.

In this blog, we bring awareness to the benefits of an EYLP Apprenticeship while exploring the differences, challenges, and benefits to help practitioners make an informed decision on which qualification is the best option for them.

EYLP

Understanding the two pathways

Early Years Lead Practitioner (apprenticeship route)

  • A work-based learning approach allowing practitioners to gain practical experience while earning their qualification.
  • Emphasises hands-on training, leadership development, and real-world application.
  • Provides an alternative for those who prefer structured workplace learning over academic study.
  • Recognised as being equivalent to a Foundation Degree or an HND.
  • Funded by the business themselves or through the apprenticeship levy. Learners can complete functional skills as part of the course if they don’t have Maths and English GCSE.

Foundation degree (university route)

  • A traditional academic route requiring a two-year full-time or three-year part-time commitment, either instead of working full-time or completing it part-time outside of working hours.
  • Includes assignments, portfolios, and extensive research.
  • Focuses heavily on theoretical knowledge, child development, psychology, and curriculum studies.
  • Best suited for those comfortable with academic learning and self-study.
  • The cost is around £5-£8K and is either self-funded or funded through student loans. Requires Maths and English GCSE grade C or above.

What does the EYLP involve?

This apprenticeship is designed for experienced early years practitioners who want to progress into leadership roles. It equips learners with advanced skills to support children’s development, lead teams, and improve early years settings.

Key learning areas

A key focus of the EYLP Apprenticeship is understanding child development and safeguarding. Practitioners learn how children grow and develop, while also ensuring their safety and well-being in early years settings.

Leadership and management skills are also a critical component. Learners develop the ability to lead a team, mentor staff, and implement improvements within their workplace. This prepares them for roles requiring greater responsibility and oversight.

Additionally, the program covers curriculum and teaching strategies. Learners gain expertise in planning and delivering engaging educational experiences that align with early years frameworks.

Finally, the EYLP includes training in legislation and policies. Practitioners are equipped to ensure compliance with legal requirements and industry standards, enhancing the overall quality of early years education.

Who is it for?

This apprenticeship is ideal for senior practitioners working in settings such as nurseries, preschools, or childcare settings. It is particularly beneficial for those looking to take on more responsibility and transition into leadership roles in a range of settings including day nurseries, playgroups, nursery schools, pre-schools, kindergartens, primary schools, hospitals, social care settings, out of school environments, and local authority provision.

Duration & assessment

The EYLP typically takes up to 24 months to complete and can be completed in less time. Assessment is conducted through coursework, observations, and a final end-point assessment, ensuring that learners demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Career progression

Graduates of the EYLP Apprenticeship can pursue roles such as Early Years Manager, Childcare Consultant, and many more roles which can be found here. The qualification also serves as a stepping stone to further education and advanced qualifications in the education and childcare sector.

Learner benefits:

  • Access to personal 1-2-1 training.
  • Learn and develop new skills that will support their career.
  • Workshops to share and discover best practice with other learners.

Student testimonial

‘I am about to complete my Level 5 Early years Lead Practitioner course. During my time completing the course, I have developed and adapted my leadership skills and ability within my role, which has helped me with my career progression. My Assessor has been VERY supportive throughout the course, offering her knowledge and guidance for tasks but also helping me navigate difficult situations I faced in my role. She was always easy to contact and gave fast replies and feedback. I am very pleased with this course and how it has help me within this career sector and with myself, I would definitely recommend this course.’

Quote from Michelle Phoenix, Head of Quality & Curriculum

‘I wish the EYLP had been an available option for me when I was studying. I learn best by applying knowledge, skills, and behaviours in the workplace. I found the degree route very confining, and it took me a while to adjust to academic writing. My advice is to choose the route that matches your learning style.

Completing a Level 5 EYLP opens the door to a rewarding career, equipping you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to provide high-quality care and education. It not only enhances your professional opportunities but also empowers you to make a meaningful impact on children’s early development and well-being.’
