When it comes to career choices, apprenticeships are often misunderstood and overlooked. Despite being a fantastic route into many industries, they are sometimes seen as a “second-best” option and not a destination, compared to university or traditional job training. Apprenticeships are rarely discussed in education, where the focus tends to be on traditional academic routes.
Yet, apprenticeships provide structured learning, valuable qualifications, and real-world experience—making them a powerful career-launching tool. They offer hands-on experience, recognised qualifications, and real career progression—without the burden of student debt.
Whether you’re a student considering your next step, a career changer, or an employer looking to develop new talent, it’s time to separate fact from fiction! In this blog, we’ll bust some of the biggest myths surrounding apprenticeships and show why they’re an incredible career option for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Myth 1: Apprenticeships are only for school leavers
Reality: While apprenticeships are a great option for young people, they are available to individuals of all ages, including those looking to change careers or upskill. Many employers offer apprenticeship programs for adults seeking new opportunities. Right now, we see more college/A-Level finishers than ever before opting for an apprenticeship.
Myth 2: Apprenticeships are only for trade/manual jobs
Reality: Although apprenticeships are common in trades like construction, plumbing, and hair and beauty, they are also available in industries such as HR, payroll, IT, business, and even marketing. Many corporate and creative fields now offer apprenticeship pathways.
Myth 3: Apprentices earn less than university graduates
Reality: Apprentices earn while they learn and avoid student debt. In the long run, they can achieve the same salaries as graduates.
Myth 4: An apprenticeship isn’t a ‘real’ qualification
Reality: Apprenticeships lead to recognised qualifications, often equivalent to diplomas or degrees. They provide hands-on experience that employers value, making apprentices job-ready from day one.
Myth 5: Apprenticeships have no career progression
Reality: Many apprentices go on to become managers, business owners, or industry leaders. Some companies even offer degree apprenticeships that lead to higher qualifications, enabling career growth without traditional university education.
Myth 6: University is a better route to success
Reality: While university is great for some careers, apprenticeships offer a practical, debt-free way to gain skills and enter the workforce faster. Success isn’t defined by a degree alone; real-world experience is just as valuable.
Myth 7: Apprenticeships are only for people who struggle academically
Reality: Apprenticeships require intelligence, dedication, and hard work. Many industries now offer higher-level apprenticeships equivalent to university degrees, making them a viable choice for high-achieving individuals.
Myth 8: Employers don’t take apprenticeships seriously
Reality: Many employers actively seek apprentices because they bring fresh talent, skills, and innovation to the workforce. Some companies even prioritise apprenticeship experience over traditional degrees because of the hands-on expertise gained.
Our Apprenticeship Recruitment Manager, Lesley, has been out and about in schools and colleges recently. Here’s what she had to say:
“I’ve attended a number of careers events recently at schools and colleges, and it’s been amazing to see so many young people interested in apprenticeships. Their value is finally being recognised as a true educational destination, not just a ‘maybe.’
However, a common misconception remains about how apprenticeships actually work. Many still believe they involve attending college one day a week, sitting in a classroom, or studying in their own time. This couldn’t be further from the truth! With personalised one-to-one tutoring, all study facilitated during working hours, and the workplace itself serving as the classroom, apprenticeships offer a completely different experience.
When I’ve explained this to young people, it’s like a lightbulb moment—the realisation that they can not only earn and learn but also be heard and learn, all while maintaining a life outside of work. In my opinion, that is a game changer.”
Apprenticeships are not a second-best option—they are a smart, practical, and financially sound route into a successful career. Whether you’re starting out, switching careers, or looking to gain new skills, an apprenticeship could be the perfect choice. So, next time you hear one of these myths, you’ll know the truth!
